Otter Energy is one of Ontario’s largest and most established solar companies, with its roots in solar project construction and maintenance. Since its founding in 2009, Otter Energy has grown into a full-service solar provider and has expanded its services to include Project Development, Operation, Maintenance, and Financing.

We are looking for a full-time Electrical Engineer that is passionate about renewable energy and sustainability. The ideal candidate is a Professional Engineer with a strong background in solar or electrical system design. The ideal candidate must be hands-on, able to take ownership of their work, and want to be part of a growing & entrepreneurial team. As an Electrical Engineer, you will gain essential knowledge and exposure to all areas of the business.

JOB SUMMARY:

In this role, the Electrical Engineer will work closely with the Business Development and Operations teams to support all technical aspects of project delivery from conception and proposal through to the final completion of a project. The Engineer will play an essential role in supporting the design, permitting, construction, and commissioning of commercial and residential solar systems.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and deliver stamped project design documents, including site plans, system layouts, and single line electrical diagrams
  • Prepare and submit connection applications and associated design documents to Hydro companies. Track progress and make revisions to ensure applications are approved in a timely manner
  • Coordinate with local building departments to ensure building permit applications are completed and submitted within time frames necessary to meet project scheduling targets
  • Prepare project feasibility designs and analysis
  • Participate in site visits for project kickoffs, site meetings with hydro company representatives, for project closeouts, or as additionally required
  • Perform project closeouts, including electrical system testing
  • Participate in the equipment selection and procurement process
  • Provide regular updates on project engineering status and milestones
  • Forecast and track design revisions and scope changes
  • Coordinate with third-party engineers (structural, civil) as needed
  • Design electrical single line diagram and installation details using AutoCAD
  • Being comfortable with new and retrofit projects
  • Application of regulations to the area of expertise and ensuring compliance
  • Incorporation of safety and risk analysis into equipment designs
  • Electrical power and distribution systems design to support other disciplines/departments/offices
  • Write and review technical reports, and construction specifications
  • Cost estimating, review and assistance
  • Capability to oversee desktop project management
  • Administrative tasks and all other duties as required
  • Knowledge, interpretation, and application of Canadian Electrical Code, National Electrical Code, and applicable energy codes
  • Ability to interpret client specifications, and Preparation of engineering reports
  • Production of detailed drawing and specifications (AutoCAD experience is a must)
  • Able to work under and meet tight deadlines
  • Design electrical single line diagram and installation details using AutoCAD
  • Create and develop engineering tools to reduce design time

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Solid understanding of the requirements of solar system design and utility interconnections
  • Excellent time management, organization, and prioritization skills
  • Commitment to continuously learn new skills including solar system design and site analysis
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, ETAP, Excel, and Word
  • Proficiency in working with digital documents and online applications
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities and ability to work independently, make decisions, and take responsibility for technical matters
  • Have excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Self-motivated and driven to succeed
  • Proven attention to detail
  • Prior experience in consulting for an owner or EPC contractor is preferred.
  • Technical skills; experience AutoCAD, ETAP, Excel, Word, Project, and a working knowledge of OESC, CEC, NEC, UL, IEEE, OBC, NFPA, etc.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety practices and standards
  • Knowledge of NERC guidelines, Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) Market Rules, and/or Hydro Quebec’s Interconnection requirements a definite asset
  • Knowledge of the solar industry and/or solar design software is considered an asset
  • Experience with CIA, CCA, Form B, DCA application is greatly desired
  • Have experience with cover testing and cover page submission is greatly desired

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • A Professional Engineer designation
  • Electrical Engineering Degree from an accredited institution
  • 4+ years of experience as an engineer in a similar environment
  • Solar energy experience is greatly desired
  • Proven experience working with CAD
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license
  • Be knowledgeable about the provincial building code, electrical code, CSA, ULC, ESA, IEEE, and IES standards
  • Flexibility to work remotely and in the Picton, ON office
