The Challenge
SCHÜTZ Canada Inc., a global leader in intermediate bulk container manufacturing, faced significant operational challenges driven by high and volatile electricity costs at their advanced reconditioning facility in Belleville, Ontario. In pursuit of cost control, enhanced energy resilience, and alignment with Net Zero targets, SCHÜTZ needed a solution that would deliver immediate and long-term financial benefits while reducing exposure to fluctuating utility rates and supporting sustainability mandates.
The Solution
SCHÜTZ Canada Inc. selected Otter Energy to deliver a comprehensive, turn-key solar PV retrofit, capitalizing on Otter Energy’s deep construction expertise and in-house project management. Otter Energy engineered a 1,584 kW DC / 990 kW AC solar system utilizing 2,732 high-efficiency PV modules, designed to maximize generation potential on the facility’s available roof space. The integrated approach ensured seamless execution from design to commissioning, optimizing the site’s renewable energy yield. As Peter Vogel, Director of Business Development, noted: “Our solar solution produces 44% of SCHÜTZ Container System’s electricity needs and saves them $502,697 per year.”

The facility now generates 44% of its total electricity demand on-site, substantially cutting grid reliance and stabilizing energy costs. Annual electricity savings have reached $502,697, with a projected lifetime savings of $12.6 million. The financial impact is underscored by a 575% ROI and a rapid payback period of just 1.63 years. Environmentally, the system offsets 528,300 kg of CO2eq each year, reinforcing SCHÜTZ’s commitment to emissions reduction and sustainable industrial practices.
