Otter Energy is Canada's only ISO9001-certified solar design-build firm. Here is why it matters:
At Otter Energy, attention to detail and quality underpin everything we do. Since 2009, we have installed over 450,000 solar panels, generating more than 150 MW of solar energy annually.
Our commitment to an all-in-house approach—from sales to installation—ensures streamlined, on-time, and on-budget service, which has earned us the trust of thousands of commercial and residential solar customers.
Why Otter Energy is ISO-9001 certified
In 2016, we made the decision to have every one of our processes, from design to engineering to construction, reviewed, scrutinized, and externally certified. The goal was to elevate our commitment to customer satisfaction and adopt a rigorous, international set of standards for all our activities. The solar industry is flooded with installers of varying quality, and we wanted to document our years of experience and prove our consistent excellence. We chose to set the bar high and apply for ISO 9001 certification.

What's ISO 9001 and Why It Matters.
ISO 9001 is published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is the world’s most widely recognized standard for quality management systems. It’s not industry-specific – companies in manufacturing, healthcare, construction, and services are all eligible to apply.
The standard revolves around these key principles:
- Customer focus and satisfaction
- Leadership commitment to quality
- Engagement of people at all levels
- Process-based approach to operations
- Continuous improvement
- Evidence-based decision making
- Relationship management with suppliers and partners
The primary objective of a solar installation company becoming ISO 9001 certified is to establish a systematic quality management system that directly addresses some of the industry’s most significant challenges: risk mitigation for high-stakes projects, operational efficiency and cost controls, enhanced customer confidence, and guaranteed quality of work.
To become certified, organizations must establish documented procedures for their key processes, implement quality objectives, conduct regular internal audits, and undergo annual third-party audits. The system requires us to define how Otter Energy will consistently deliver quality, measure our performance, and continuously improve.
At Otter Energy, We Audit, Then Audit Again.
ISO 9001 views a business as a system of interconnected processes rather than isolated departments. For a full service solar solution provider like Otter Energy, this means documenting everything from how we qualify sales opportunities and conduct site assessments to solar solution design details, installation procedures, testing protocols, and customer follow-up processes.
The ongoing commitment to training, documentation and time required to maintain the ISO 9001 certification is significant. Otter Energy has a dedicated, in-house, specially trained ISO 9001 auditor who works closely with external ISO 9001 auditors and compliance teams. This internal auditor spends hundreds of hours a year completing required records that span hundreds of documents that detail our compliance across all aspects of business organization, efficiency, and quality.
For example, every Otter Energy employee (there are more than 60) has their training, certifications and permits documented yearly. This records certifications such as Working at Heights, first aid, machinery operation licenses, health and safety training, and other relevant qualifications. If audited, we can produce a file per employee that shows every aspect of their training and professional license profile.
We rigorously audit every vendor, supplier and external company we work with. If these partners fail to meet our expectations for quality, service, delivery, or timing, we work with them to correct the issue. In rare cases, we may transition to another high-quality vendor or supplier to ensure our high standards are consistently met.
On the operational side, every detail of our processes, from design to engineering, permitting, and delivery, is meticulously documented for each project we complete. The goal of this attention to detail is to standardize our high-quality execution and continually improve our workflow and efficiency.
What Does Being ISO 9001 Certified Mean for Our Customers?
Delivering the best experience and highest value to our customers drives everything we do. Being ISO 9001 certified isn’t just some marketing angle. The value in working with an ISO 9001-certified solar installer lies in a guaranteed systematic approach to quality management.
You can be assured of efficiency, reduced waste, highly engaged employees and an intense commitment to customer satisfaction before, during and after implementation. Here are some of the other ways Otter Energy’s solar customers benefit from our dedication to the ISO9001 standard:
1. Guaranteed Quality and Consistency Across Every Project
ISO 9001 ensures we follow rigorous quality management processes from initial consultation through final installation and ongoing maintenance. Whether you’re installing a residential rooftop system or a multi-megawatt commercial array, you can expect the same high standards and systematic approach that eliminates costly mistakes and ensures optimal system performance.

2. Reduced Risk and Greater Project Reliability
Our ISO 9001 certification means we have documented procedures for risk management, supplier qualification, and project execution. For large commercial and industrial clients, especially, this translates to fewer delays, better budget predictability, and confidence that Otter Energy will complete your project on time and to specification. Otter Energy isn’t just another solar contractor – we’re a systematically managed organization.
3. Enhanced Long-term Support and Warranty Confidence
ISO 9001 requires us to maintain detailed documentation and continuous improvement processes. This means better tracking of your system components, more reliable warranty support, and confidence that we’ll be here for the 25+ year lifespan of your solar investment. Our quality management system ensures institutional knowledge isn’t lost as our team grows.

4. Superior Vendor and Supply Chain Management
As Canada’s only ISO 9001 certified solar installer, we maintain qualified supplier networks and component traceability that other installers don’t match. This dedication to quality control ensures that you receive higher-quality panels, inverters, and batteries, with improved availability and more reliable delivery timelines, which are crucial for large projects with tight deadlines.
5. Continuous Improvement and Industry Leadership
ISO 9001 isn’t just a certificate on the wall – it requires annual audits and continuous improvement. At Otter Energy, we continually refine our processes, adopt best practices, and stay ahead of industry changes. When you choose us for your solar project, you’re partnering with a company committed to excellence, not just today, but year after year.
